Deep Track Designs

An Eclectic Approach to Music, Design, and Life

Elizabeth Becken Season 1 Episode 7

Straight out of the gate, you can tell Elizabeth’s especially passionate about this topic. She begins with drawing a parallel between the way she’s led her life and experimental gardening. She says, “Life is an experiment... You gotta try new things!"

Be prepared to hang on to your earbuds, because this episode features more music discussion than any other previous track!

If you’re a returning listener to Deep Track Designs, you may recall how Elizabeth started listening to all kinds of records at an early age. She explains how she moved from loving rock to swiftly adopting an appreciation for classical in a matter of just a few years, all thanks to an older brother who she clearly adores.

She and her co-host banter back and forth about the way their musical backgrounds developed – in many cases, simultaneously. The undeniable connection between these two makes for a delightfully entertaining exchange of music trivia and laughter. Their eclectic tastes in music, like a hummingbird dipping from one flower to the next, covers tremendous territory. They bop from country to disco, soft rock, pop rock, blues rock, crossovers, and, finally, to one of Elizabeth’s favorite eclectic music artists, Paul McCartney.

As always, she selects a theme song to go with each episode. Elizabeth likes how her favorite Paul McCartney and Wings tune, Bluebird, fits. She says the gentle song lends to being free to do what you like, whatever it may be.

For a moment or two, Elizabeth gets caught up in Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. She explains she was nearly brought to her knees while Ed Sheeran sang Perfect to the Queen.

Of course, this episode couldn’t rock n’ roll on by without mentioning Paul’s being knighted by Her Majesty in 1997.

So, how about that eclectic design process…

Elizabeth warns pulling an eclectic design together can be tricky. She highlights some basic, less strict rules:  mixing the old with the new, choosing mismatched furniture, blending styles, using plenty of contrasting textures, and adding a few exceptional, standout pieces. She also offers a few tips for maintaining a more unified look and relaxing the eye.

Finally, she shares the story of her eclectic approach to education, careers, and adventure. You’ll be surprised to learn what Elizabeth first studied after high school; listen to the end of this special track to find out!
